NRL: Off Contract Players That Could Be On The Move In 2019
October 23, 2018
With only days remaining before clubs are free to approach off-contract players for next season we thought we’d give you the rundown on who will be looking for a club for 2019.
Brisbane Broncos
Off Contract for 2019:
- Tevita Pangai Jnr
- Matt Lodge
- Corey Oates
The Rumour Mill- Brisbane are desperate to retain these three, in particular, Pangai Jnr, who was the breakout star of the 2018 season. The 22-year-old has reportedly turned down a contract offer from the Newcastle Knights and it looks like his loyalty to departing super-coach Wayne Bennett will see him stay at the Broncos for at least another year.
Like Pangai Jnr, Corey Oates also looks set to remain a Bronco in 2019, with some of the Queensland origin representative’s teammates set to take significant pay cuts to keep the high-flying winger in Brisbane.
Controversial forward Matt Lodge is another Brisbane player who has turned down a contract offer from Newcastle and is reportedly one of the many Broncos players who are willing to take a pay cut in 2019 to allow the club to resign Corey Oates.

Cronulla Sharks
Off Contract for 2019
- James Segeyaro
The Rumour Mill- The livewire number 9 is a hot commodity at the moment, with several clubs all chasing the signature of Papua New Guinea international Captain. Newcastle, Parramatta, the Bulldogs and Cronulla are all after Segeyaro’s services in 2019, with the Cronulla hooker commanding close to $300 000 a season which the Sharks cannot afford. Newcastle is eager to sign Segeyaro after missing out on the Isaac Luke and coach Nathan Brown has already held a meeting with Segeyaro.
Gold Coast Titans
Off Contract for 2019:
- Mitch Rein
The Rumour Mill-After rejuvenating his career with the Titans in 2018, Mitch Rein looks set to stay at the Gold Coast club, with all indicators pointing to him taking up the player option in his contract for the 2019 season.
Manly Sea Eagles

Melbourne Storm
Off Contract for 2019:
- Cameron Smith
The Rumour Mill- Will Cameron Smith play on in 2019? This has become the biggest question in the NRL since the grand final and it remains unanswered. The Melbourne Storm have reportedly offered the 2-time Dally M medal winner a contract, but he has yet to accept the deal. If Smith plays anywhere in 2019 it will be with Melbourne Storm and if he plays on will be the first player to play 400 NRL games.
New Zealand Warriors

Newcastle Knights
Off Contract for 2019:
- Ken Sio
- Cory Denniss
- Luke Yates
- Jamie Buhrer
The Rumour Mill – With the Knights making some promising new signings and still on the hunt for some more big-names, it will be very hard for the team to keep these off-contract players. Sio and Yates both look destined for the Superleague after Sio was offered a contract that his manager described as “pathetic” and no contract being offered to Yates.

Cory Denniss rejected an offer from Newcastle, deciding to test his value on the open market and is still currently off contract.

Parramatta Eels
Off Contract for 2019:
- Jarryd Hayne
- David Gower
- George Jennings
- Cameron King
- Kaysa Pritchard
The Rumour Mill- Parramatta’s salary cap woes will continue to haunt them with the Dragons making a large $500 000 offer to the star. Hayne has stated he wants to stay at Parramatta and is waiting for a contract offer but it remains to see if they can afford to keep the former NFL running back.
Penrith Panthers
All current regular first grade players have contracts for 2019
South Sydney Rabbitohs
Off Contract for 2019
- John Sutton
- Robert Jennings
- Hymel Hunt
The Rumour Mill- Rabbitohs champion John Sutton looks set to return for another season in Redfern as both him and the club want Sutton to be there in 2019. Apparent salary cap pressure at South Sydney could be a reason for the delay, as it seems just a formality Sutton will be in Red and Green in 2019.
Breakout winger Robert Jennings put his contract negotiations on hold during the finals campaign and Souths will be desperate to keep the winger who, along with Sutton, performs a crucial part of their destructive left side attack.
The Newcastle Knights appear very interested in securing the services of Hymel Hunt. The club has already singed Jesse Raimen and Edrick Lee to bolster their backline and are keen to add some more depth in the form of Hunt.
