January 14, 2025

For the third straight year, Canadian Nick Taylor of Winnipeg, Manitoba, has won on the PGA Tour. After winning the 2023 Canadian Open and the 2024 Waste Management Phoenix Open, Taylor won the 2025 Sony Open in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Taylor shot a four round score of -16. He went into a playoff with Colombia’s Nicolas Echavarria. In the two-hole extra period, Taylor and Echavarria both birdied the 18th hole. Then with the second hole, Taylor birdied the 18th hole, while Echavarria was unable to go under par.
The key shot for Taylor came on the 18th hole in the fourth round on Sunday. That is when he made a spectacular eagle shot from the rough. The shot put him to -16 from -14 and was soon the outright leader before Echavarria birdied the 18th hole himself.
Taylor also came through with a remarkable comeback on Sunday. He was once down by five strokes in the fourth round, before coming back to beat American J.J. Spaun.
The fact that Taylor won on the PGA Tour last season and this season, and yet was not selected to the International Team by captain Mike Weir for the Presidents Cup will now be questioned. Weir was reportedly concerned with Taylor’s putting at the time. In the three tournaments Taylor has won over the last three years. the short game has been Taylor’s strength.
Taylor’s first PGA Tour win came at the 2014 Sanderson Farms Championship in Jackson, Mississippi. Taylor’s second PGA Tour win came at the 2020 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am in northern California.
