The quarterfinals are set in the men’s singles draw and the women’s singles draw at the 2022 United States Open. There is an Australian in the men’s draw and in the women’s draw.
In the men’s draw, Nick Kyrgios of Canberra is in the final eight. On Sunday, Kyrgios defeated world number one Daniil Medvedev of Russia for the second time this summer. After beating him 6-7, 6-4, 6-2 in the second round of the National Bank Open in Montreal in August, Kyrgios beat Medvedev 7-6, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 on Sunday in the fourth round of the 2022 U.S. Open.
Kyrgios, the 23rd seed, will next play another Russian in Karen Khachanov next. Head-to-head Kyrgios and Khachanov have one win each. Khachanov beat Kyrgios in the second round of Cincinnati in 2019, 6-7, 7-6, 6-2. Kyrgios beat Khachanov in the third round of the 2020 Australian Open, 6-2, 7-6, 6-7, 6-7, 7-6.
In the women’s draw, Ajla Tomljanovic of Brisbane beat Liudmila Samsonova of Russia 7-6, 6-1 in the fourth round on Sunday. Unforced errors were the key statistic in this match. Tomljanovic had 27, while Samsonova had 56. Tomljanovic will next face Wimbledon finalist and number five seed Ons Jabeur of Tunisia. Jabeur beat Tomljanovic in their only prior meeting, in the second round of Rome earlier this year, 7-5, 6-2.
The three other men’s quarterfinal matches have fifth seed Casper Ruud of Norway against 13th seed Matteo Berrettini of Italy, third seed Carlos Alcaraz of Spain against 11th seed Jannik Sinner of Italy, and ninth seed Andrey Rublev of Russia against 22nd seed Frances Tiafoe of the United States. The three other women’s quarterfinal matches have the first seed Iga Swiatek of Poland against eighth seed Jessica Pegula of the United States, sixth seed Aryna Sabalenka of Russia against the 22nd seed Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic and the 12th seed Coco Gauff of the United States against the 17th seed Caroline Garcia of France.
