According to Sam Murphy of Yahoo! Sports on Friday, Nick Dunlap of Huntsville, Alabama has been named the 2024 PGA Tour Rookie of the Year. He follows Scottie Scheffler of Ridgewood, New Jersey, who was named the PGA Tour Player of the Year on December 10.
It was a notable season for Dunlap, as he became the first golfer ever to win a PGA event as an amateur and as a professional in the same calendar year. When Dunlap won the 2024 American Express in La Quinta, California in January, he became the first golfer in 33 years to win a PGA event as an amateur. The last golfer to accomplish that feat was Phil Mickelson, who won the 1991 Northern Telecom Open in Tucson, Arizona.
By winning in La Quinta, Dunlap also became the second youngest golfer to win on the PGA Tour in the last 90 years at the age of 20 years and 29 days. When Jordan Spieth of Dallas, Texas won the 2013 John Deere Classic, he was 19 years and 352 days old.
Dunlap’s four round score at the American Express was -29. He beat South Africa’s Christiaan Bezuidenhout by a stroke.
As a professional, Dunlap won the Barracuda Championship in Truckee, California in July. In a tournament that uses the Stableford scoring system, Dunlap had 49 points, and beat Vince Whaley of Lexington, Kentucky by two points.
Dunlap is currently ranked 32nd in the Official World Golf Rankings. That is a rise of 4089 spots in the world rankings compared to the 4121st place he was at the end of 2023.
