Drew Brees of Dallas, Texas, one of the greatest quarterbacks of all-time, has retired at age 42 according to Brett Martel of the Associated Press on Sunday. Brees quarterbacked the San Diego Chargers and New Orleans Saints for the last two decades, and holds numerous NFL records. They include most career passing yards (80,358), most pass completions (7142), highest pass completion percentage for a career (67.69%), most pass completions in a season (471 in 2016), highest single-season completion percentage (74.4% in 2018), and most consecutive games with a touchdown pass (54, from October 18 to 2009 until November 25, 2012).

Brees also holds two key single-game National Football League records. They include most touchdown passes in a game (eight) and the highest single-game completion percentage. Brees became one of eight quarterbacks to throw eight touchdowns in a game. He accomplished the feat in a 52-49 Saints win over the New York Giants on November 1, 2015. Brees also had a record-breaking completion percentage of 96.7% for a single game in a 34-7 New Orleans win over the Indianapolis Colts on December 16, 2019. Brees completed 29 of 30 passes for 307 yards and four touchdowns.

Even though Brees holds the NFL records for most passing yards and pass completions, he is expected to be passed in each category by Tom Brady of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Brady, who signed a two-year contract extension this past week, is second on the all-time list in passing yards (79,204) and completions (6778).

Brees also finished his career with 571 touchdown passes, which puts him second all-time behind Brady, who has 581. A 13-time Pro Bowler, Brees won a Super Bowl with the Saints in 2010. He was also named Super Bowl MVP as New Orleans defeated the Colts 31-17.

In December of 2019, The Sporting Base came up with a list of the top 10 NFL players of all-time. Brees was number seven.
