Packers sign defensive end Whitney Mercilus
October 21, 2021
The Green Bay Packers made an effort to improve their defense on Wednesday. According to Rob Demovsky of ESPN, the Packers signed defensive end Whitney Mercilus of Akron, Ohio. The signing came only one day after he was released by the Houston Texans.
Mercilus has been a constant on the Texans’ defense over the last decade. He has played 134 games in Houston, of which he has started 10 games. During that time, Mercilus has had 357 combined tackles (234 solo tackles and 123 assisted tackles), 72 tackles for a loss, 57 sacks, two interceptions for 88 yards, seven pass deflections, 13 forced fumbles, nine fumble recoveries for 14 yards, and 115 quarterback hits.

In 2021, Mercilus played on a Texans team that is currently in a state of transition. Despite the fact Houston has a poor record of one win and five losses, Mercilus has had 12 combined tackles (six solo tackles and six assisted tackles), four tackles for a loss, and three quarterback hits.
Now Mercilus joins a Packers squad currently first in the NFC North with a record of five wins and one loss. Green Bay is known throughout the National Football League for their explosive and dynamic offense, with a vulnerable defense. However, it has got better this season after a poor start here they gave up 83 points in their first three games. In their last three games, the Packers have given up only 53 points.
Mercilus becomes the second high-profile defensive player to leave the Texans in the last year. J.J. Watt signed with the Arizona Cardinals in March.
