NFL quarterback Philip Rivers retires at age 39
January 22, 2021

According to the Associated Press on Wednesday, National Football League quarterback Philip Rivers of Decatur, Alabama, announced his retirement at the age of 39. Rivers played 17 seasons in the NFL from 2004 to 2020 with the San Diego/Los Angeles Chargers, and the Indianapolis Colts.
Initially selected in the first round, fourth overall, by the New York Giants in the 2004 NFL Draft out of North Carolina State, Rivers never played for the Giants, as he was traded immediately thereafter to the Chargers for Eli Manning. After 16 seasons in the Chargers organization, he played his final NFL season in 2020 with the Colts.
This past season, Rivers guided the Colts to the playoffs, only to lose 27-24 to the Buffalo Bills in one of six wildcard games. In the regular season, he completed 369 passes in 543 attempts for 4169 yards, 24 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions.
Despite never winning a Super Bowl, Rivers is definitely headed to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton. In his career, he completed 5277 passes for 63440 yards, with 421 touchdowns, and 209 interceptions. Rivers also had 383 rushes for 601 yards and three touchdowns. He was also selected to the Pro Bowl eight times (2006, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2016, 2017, and 2018).
Rivers’s 63440 yards and 421 touchdowns are the fifth most in NFL history. The only quarterbacks he is behind on both lists are Drew Brees, Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, and Brett Favre.
In 2008, Rivers led the NFL with 34 touchdown passes. In 2010, he led the NFL with 4710 passing yards. Then in 2013, Rivers won the NFL Comeback Player of the Year Award as he led the NFL in completion percentage at 69.5%.
For most players when they retire, their career settles down. Life is expected to get busier for Rivers. That is because Philip and his wife Tiffany have nine children.
