NFL Player Profile: Justin Herbert

There is no doubt Los Angeles is the place to be in the National Football League at the moment. There is not one, but two elite teams. Could we see an all LA Super Bowl? That is a definitely possibility if Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert progresses after an excellent 2021 season.

2021 Season

Justin Herbert might have only led the Chargers to a record of nine wins and eight losses, but he had a Pro Bowl season. He completed 443 passes in 672 attempts for 5014 yards and 38 touchdowns with 15 interceptions. On the ground, Herbert had 63 rushes for 302 yards and three touchdowns.

Herbert was second in the NFL in pass completions (443). The leader was Tom Brady (485 pass completions). Herbert was also second in the NFL in passing yards (5014), as Brady led that category too with 5316 passing yards. Herbert’s 38 touchdowns was third in the NFL behind Brady (43) and Matthew Stafford of the Los Angeles Rams (41).

Leading up to the NFL

A native of Eugene, Oregon, Herbert stayed home to play college football as he played with the University of Oregon Ducks from 2016 to 2019. In his senior season, Herbert won the William V. Campbell Trophy which combines excellence in academics, community service and on field performance. Herbert was the Chargers first round pick, sixth overall, in the 2020 NFL Draft.

Sizzling Rookie Season

Herbert had a rookie season for the ages. He completed 396 passes in 595 attempts for 31 touchdowns and 15 interceptions. He set the NFL records for most completions by a rookie, passing touchdowns by a rookie, most passing yards per game by a rookie quarterback (289.1) and most 300 yard passing games by a rookie quarterback (eight). At the end of the year, Herbert was named the Associated Press Rookie of the Year.

NFL Career

Herbert has completed 839 passes in 1267 attempts for 9350 yards, 69 touchdowns and 25 interceptions. He also has 118 rushes 536 yards and eight touchdowns.

 2022 Los Angeles Chargers

It was on defense that the Chargers focused their attention in the offseason. They acquired Khalil Mack from the Chicago Bears, cornerback J.C. Jackson from the New England Patriots, defensive tackle Sebastian Joseph-Day from the Los Angeles Rams, and nose tackle Austin Johnson from the New York Giants.
