Green Bay Packers sign quarterback Blake Bortles
May 14, 2021
The Green Bay Packers signed quarterback Blake Bortles of Oviedo, Florida according to ESPN on Wednesday. The news that the Packers have signed Bortles should not come as a major shock because the future of reigning National Football League Most Valuable Player Aaron Rodgers’ time with the Packers appears questionable at best.
The Packers will be Bortles’s third National Football League team. In addition to five seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars from 2014 to 2018, Bortles was with the Los Angeles Rams in 2019. Last season, he shared his time with the Rams and Denver Broncos, but did not get into any game action.
In his career, Bortles has completed 1562 passes in 2634 attempts for 17649 yards, 103 touchdowns, and 75 interceptions. He has also had 283 carries for 1766 yards, and eight touchdowns. While with the Jaguars in 2015, Bortles led the NFL with four game-winning drives.

Bortles also holds three notable single-season Jaguars records. They are most touchdown passes (35 in 2015), passing yards (4428 in 2015), and pass completions (368 in 2016).
Dissension between Rodgers and the Packers organization appeared to start in the 2020 offseason when Green Bay drafted a quarterback in Jordan Love with their first-round pick. At the time there was a belief by many that the Packers needed to use the pick to upgrade their defense.
Now one could argue a major reason why the Packers signed Bortles is because Rodgers and Love were their only two quarterbacks on their roster. The Packers have denied rumours that Rodgers will be traded. One needs to wonder if Rodgers, who is 37, will show up to training camp when that gets underway for quarterbacks on July 23. Rodgers meanwhile, has a base salary of $14.7 million in 2021.
