Browns trade Baker Mayfield to the Panthers

The starting quarterback carousel for the Carolina Panthers of the National Football League is continuing. On Wednesday, the Panthers acquired quarterback Baker Mayfield from the Cleveland Browns for a conditional draft pick in either 2024 or 2025 according to the Associated Press.

Mayfield joins Cam Newton, Kyle Allen, Teddy Bridgewater, and Sam Darnold as the starting quarterbacks in Carolina over the last five seasons. One would expect that Mayfield would be the starting quarterback in Carolina, and it will be interesting to see what they will now do with Darnold. Will they have the former New York Jet be the backup. or try to trade Darnold to another team?

Mayfield has spent the last four seasons in Cleveland since he was the first overall draft pick in the 2018 National Football League Draft out of Oklahoma. He has completed 1185 passes in 1924 attempts for 14125 yards, 92 touchdowns and 56 interceptions. He also has 158 rushes for 571 yards and five touchdowns. In 2021, Mayfield completed 253 passes in 418 attempts for 3010 yards, 17 touchdown and 13 interceptions. He also had 37 rushes for 134 yards and one touchdown.

The fact that Mayfield was traded should not surprise anyone. That is because the Browns have controversially committed themselves to quarterback Deshaun Watson, who was traded from Houston to Cleveland on March 18.  Watson could face a lengthy suspension by the National Football League because he is accused of sexual misconduct from 24 massage therapists in Texas. Remember, Watson did not play at all last season.

The Mayfield trade looked more and more like a possibility when Cleveland signed Jacoby Brissett on March 25. Brissett played 11 games and started five of them for the Miami Dolphins a year ago.
