February 7, 2022

There was a blockbuster trade in the National Basketball Association on Friday between the Portland Trail Blazers and Los Angeles Clippers. According to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPNÂ , the Trail Blazers traded swingman Norman Powell of San Diego, California and power forward Robert Covington of Bellwood, Illinois to the Clippers for guard Eric Bledsoe of Birmingham, Alabama, swingman Justise Winslow of Houston, Texas, shooting guard Keon Johnson of Shelbyville, Tennessee, and a second round pick in the 2025 NBA Draft.
The biggest name in the trade is Powell. who is the only player among the five players dealt who was averaging in the double digits in points per game. He was averaging 18.7 points per game this season in Portland. Powell was also averaging 3.3 rebounds per game, 2.1 assists per game, had a field goal percentage of .456, three-point percentage of .406, and a free throw percentage of .803.
This is the second straight season that Powell was traded. Last year he was traded from the Toronto Raptors to the Trail Blazers. Powell was an integral part of the Raptors team that won the NBA Finals in 2019.
The Clippers will be the fifth NBA team for Covington. In addition to the Trail Blazers, he has played for the Houston Rockets, Philadelphia 76ers, and Minnesota Timberwolves.
This will also be the fifth NBA team for Bledsoe. In addition to the Clippers, he has played for the Phoenix Suns, Milwaukee Bucks and New Orleans Pelicans.
The fact that the Trail Blazers acquired a draft pick from 2025 is intriguing. You rarely see teams go after a draft pick three years down the road.
