According to Rogers Sportsnet on Friday, the Boston Celtics have signed big man Blake Griffin of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. There are no reports yet on the financial terms of the contract, but we do know that the terms of the contract is fully guaranteed for a full year.
Griffin will be joining his fourth National Basketball Association franchise after playing eight seasons with the Los Angeles Clippers, four seasons with the Detroit Pistons and two seasons with the Brooklyn Nets. There is no doubt Griffin is a powerful presence at 6’9″, 250 pounds.
A six-time All-Star, Griffin represented the Clippers in five straight NBA All-Star Games from 2011-2015, and then the Pistons in 2019. It is while with the Pistons in 2018-19, that he had a career-high 24.5 points. Griffin was the first overall pick in the 2009 NBA Draft by the Clippers out of the University of Oklahoma.
The Celtics were in need of some depth after they lost Danilo Gallinari of Sant’Angelo Lodigiano, Italy to a torn anterior cruciate ligament in World Cup qualifying in August. Gallinari averaged 11.7 points per game last season with the Atlanta Hawks.

Boston has made significant NBA headlines over the last few weeks. Joe Mazzulla has taken over from Ime Udoka of Portland, Oregon. Mazzulla is currently the interim head coach of the Celtics as Udoka was suspended for an inappropriate consensual relationship with a female staffer, which broke company rules of the Boston Celtics. Aa a result, Udoka will not be coaching the Celtics in 2021-22.
Now there are reports that the Celtics may hire a big name assistant coach with plenty of head coaching experience to help Mazzulla this season. Among the options at this time are Frank Vogel and Terry Stotts. Vogel has head coaching experience with the Orlando Magic, Indiana Pacers and Los Angeles Lakers. Stotts has coaching experience with the Atlanta Hawks, Milwaukee Bucks and Portland Trail Blazers.
