Anthony Edwards becomes the third youngest player to score 40 points in a NBA game

Anthony Edwards of Atlanta, Georgia made NBA headlines this past year off the court when he was selected first overall by the Minnesota Timberwolves. Now, he is making NBA headlines for his stellar performance on the court.

On Thursday, Edwards became the third youngest player in NBA history to score 40 points in a game at 19 years and 225 days old according to ESPN. He led the Timberwolves with 42 points in a 123-119 win over the Phoenix Suns.

The only two younger players than Edwards to score 40 points in a game were LeBron James and Kevin Durant. James had 41 points in a 107-104 Cleveland Cavaliers win over the New Jersey Nets on March 27, 2004 at 19 years and 88 days old, and Durant had 42 points in a 126-121 Seattle Supersonics win over the Golden State Warriors on April 16, 2008 at 19 years and 200 days old. Interestingly, this was the last game in the history of the Seattle Supersonics franchise before the team moved to Oklahoma City.

Edwards was actually one of two Timberwolves players to register 40 points in a game, as Karl-Anthony Towns had 41 points. This was only the second time ever that two Timberwolves scored 40 points in a single game. The first time came on April 9, 2017 as Towns and Andrew Wiggins both accomplished the feat. Towns had 40 points and Wiggins scored 41 points in a 110-109 Minnesota loss to the Los Angeles Lakers.

In addition to 42 points, Edwards had seven rebounds, three assists and two steals in the four-point Minnesota win. He is averaging 16.8 points per game this season. Despite the win, Minnesota still has the worst record in the NBA at 10 wins and 31 losses.
