NBA point guard Derrick Rose retires at age 35
September 27, 2024
According to James Parker of Ball Exclusives, point guard Derrick Rose of Chicago, Illinois announced his retirement at the age of 35 on Thursday. The news of Rose’s retirement should not be a huge surprise because he was put on waivers by the Memphis Grizzlies on Monday.Â
Rose spent 16 seasons in the National Basketball Association from 2008 to 2024. He was with the Chicago Bulls for seven seasons (from 2008 to 2016), the New York Knicks for four seasons (2016 to 2017, and 2021 to 2023), the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2018, the Minnesota Timberwolves for two seasons in 2018 and 2019, the Detroit Pistons for two seasons from 2019 to 2021, and the Memphis Grizzlies for one season from 2023 to 2024.
Rose averaged 17.4 points per game, 5.2 assists per game, and 3.2 rebounds per game. He also had a field goal percentage of .456, a three-point percentage of .316, and a free throw percentage of .831.
Rose played his college basketball at Memphis, and the point guard was the first overall pick in the 2008 NBA Draft by the Bulls. It would not take long for Rose to have an impact. In his first NBA season of 2008-09, he averaged 16.8 points per game, and was the rookie of the year. Then in 2010-11, Rose was named the NBA’s most valuable player after averaging a career-high 25 points per game.
For three straight seasons, Rose was a NBA All-Star. However, he missed the entire 2012-13 season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament. After the injury, Rose was never really the dynamic player on the hardcourt that he was at the beginning of his career.
There was significant controversy surrounding Rose prior to his time in the NBA. An investigation concluded that Rose’s SAT scores were invalid, and as a result his school was penalized. The University of Memphis ended the season with a 0-1 record, despite the fact they went 38-2 and lost to Kansas in the March Madness final.
