Moonee Valley Review: Mr Brightside On The Rise
March 21, 2023
THE fifth running of the All-Star Mile at The Valley produced the most exciting edition of the series and possibly it’s best winner in Mr Brightside.
Ben Hayes has always said that he has come back a better horse each preparation and there’s a chance by the end of the year, with Anamoe likely to have been retired, he could be Australia’s best horse.
If he can make it back to back Doncaster Miles, he’ll take a step closer to being in the top few horses in the land.
Mr Brightside is a horse in the tradition of weight-for-age horses from yesteryear as he is tough and always puts in.
As for the All-Star Mile itself, there was a lot of post race chatter regarding the performance of Keats.
Why can’t he be in the race? He was voted in but at the weight-for-age level, it’s proving too hard for the next tier of horses to compete in the ASM.
Why not make it a set weights and penalties event? Or better still have a Consolation or a secondary ASM event where horses such as Keats who are voted in can swap with a better performed horse who is not in the race and take some of their prizemoney and still get to run in the other event.
In terms of quality, the winners have all been above-average horses so the concept is working from the viewpoint of class.
