The Seattle Mariners have signed catcher Andrew Knizner of Glen Allen, Virginia according to Rogers Sportsnet on Tuesday. The terms of the contract are one year and worth $1 million.
Knizner is joining his fourth Major League Baseball team. He has previously played five seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals from 2019 to 2023, and one season each with the Texas Rangers (2024) and San Francisco Giants (2025).
Knizner played 33 games for the Giants last season. During 77 games and 88 plate appearances, Knizner scored 12 runs and had 17 hits, one double, one triple, one home run, with five runs batted in, seven walks, 23 total bases, one sacrifice bunt, one sacrifice fly, a batting average of .221, an on base percentage of .299 and a slugging percentage of .299.
In 2025, Knizner’s triple, home run, and sacrifice fly came in Giants wins. The home run was in a 6-2 Giants win over the eventual World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers on June 13, and the triple and sacrifice fly came in a 4-3 Giants win over the St. Louis Cardinals on September 24.
While with the Mariners, Knizner will be the backup to Cal Raleigh of Cullowhee, North Carolina behind the plate in Seattle. Raleigh is considered not only one of the best hitting catchers in Major League Baseball right now, but one of the best hitters in Major League Baseball too.
The Mariners had the third best record in the American League in 2025. With a record of 90 wins and 72 losses, they were only behind the Toronto Blue Jays and New York Yankees. The Blue Jays and Yankees were both at 94 wins and 68 losses.
