Mam’s $4m contract on the line in crunch Maguire meeting
October 21, 2024
Ezra Mam is facing having his four year contract with the Brisbane Broncos that’s worth upwards of $1 million a season torn up as the 21-year-old prepares for a “crunch meeting” with new coach Michael Maguire on Wednesday.
Mam is still awaiting the result of a secondary sample test after he allegedly failed a roadside drug test following a head-on car crash. The two-car crash saw Mam collide with an Uber carrying three passengers on Friday.
Police have also alleged the 21-year-old NRL star was caught driving without a license.
The Broncos are now considering cancelling the five-eighth’s newly-signed contract, which was only signed in February and will see him earn $4 million through to 2029 while playing for the Brisbane powerhouse. Final say will come after Mam’s meeting with Maguire, which reports suggest is planned sometime during the new coach’s first day.

A whole lot hinges on the Queensland Police’s findings, with Brisbane boss Dave Donaghy refusing to say whether Mam had played his last game at the club while speaking about the affair on 4BC Radio.
“We haven’t had a discussion internally in depth,” Donaghy said.
“We don’t have all the facts,” the Broncos boss continued. “We want to ensure we’ve got all the information so we can make the right decision for us.
“But certainly from a club’s perspective, we’re very disappointed to find ourselves in a position like this.
Donaghy added there’ll be “accountability” no matter what. “Ezra is a young man. Unfortunately, in this industry, you need to grow up quickly. That’s the price of entry. It’s a very privileged role. I am big on responsibility and accountability.
