According to Cody Benjamin of CBS Sports on Monday, the Detroit Lions have signed quarterback Teddy Bridgewater of Miami, Florida. The length of the contract and financial terms were not released.
Bridgewater is joining his sixth National Football League franchise. He was previously with the Minnesota Vikings from 2014 to 2017, the New Orleans Saints in 2018 and 2019, the Carolina Panthers in 2020, the Denver Broncos in 2021, and the Miami Dolphins in 2022.
This past season in Miami, Bridgewater was third on the Miami depth chart behind Tua Tagovailoa of Ewa Beach, Hawaii and Skylar Thompson of Palmyra, Missouri. He completed 48 of 79 passes for 683 passing yards, four touchdown passes and four interceptions. Bridgewater also had three rushes for 27 rushing yards.
Bridgewater will now be backing up Jared Goff while with the Lions. Goff is now in his third season in Detroit, and was selected to the Pro Bowl last season. In 2022, he completed 382 passes in 587 attempts for 4438 passing yards, 29 passing touchdowns and seven interceptions. Goff also had 29 rushes for 73 rushing yards. It was the third time Goff was selected to the Pro Bowl, as he was also honoured with the Rams in 2017 and 2018.
Bridgewater meanwhile was selected to the Pro Bowl while with the Vikings in 2015. That year he completed 292 passes in 447 attempts. Bridgewater had 3231 passing yards, 14 touchdowns, and nine interceptions. He also had 44 rushes for 192 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns.
There is no doubt the Lions are a team on the rise in the NFC. However it will be interesting to see if the offseason suspensions will impact their squad when the regular season begins.
