According to the Associated Press on Wednesday, the Carolina Panthers have traded quarterback Teddy Bridgewater of Miami, Florida to the Denver Broncos for a sixth-round draft pick in the 2021 National Football League Draft, which takes place on Thursday.
The Panthers’ trade of Bridgewater was expected. That is because Carolina acquired quarterback Sam Darnold from the New York Jets in a trade on April 6.
The Broncos now become Bridgewater’s fourth National Football League franchise. However, this will have been the first time he has played in the AFC. Prior to this season, Bridgewater has played for the Minnesota Vikings, New Orleans Saints, and Panthers–three teams in the NFC.
In 2020, Bridgewater completed 340 passes of 492 pass attempts for 3733 yards, 15 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. For his career over the last six seasons, Bridgewater completed 1038 passes of 1562 pass attempts for 11385 yards, 53 touchdowns, and 36 interceptions.
On the ground this past year, Bridgewater had 53 rushes for 279 yards and five touchdowns. In his career, he has had 186 rushes for 713 yards and nine touchdowns.
Interestingly, Bridgewater put up better statistical numbers in 2020 with the Panthers than he did with the Vikings in 2015 when he was selected to the Pro Bowl. Six years ago, Bridgewater completed 292 passes in 447 attempts for 3231 yards, 14 touchdowns, and nine interceptions. However, the one glaring statistic that was different, was victories. In 2015, the Vikings posted a record of 11 wins and five losses with Bridgewater at quarterback. In 2021, the Panthers only won four of 15 games with Bridgewater at the helm.
There are reports that the Broncos are considering drafting a quarterback in the first round of Thursday’s NFL Draft. Denver has the ninth overall selection. Interestingly, the Panthers have the eighth overall pick.
