Top five storylines from Week 18 of the NFL season
January 11, 2023
The National Football League regular season has come to a completion. Here are five storylines for the week.
5) Jamaal Williams sets Lions record.
Detroit Lions running back Jamaal Williams set the Lions record for most rushing touchdowns in a season with 17. Barry Sanders of Wichita, Texas had the old record as he had 16 touchdowns in 1991. Williams accomplished the feat on Sunday night at Lambeau Field in a 20-16 Lions win over the Green Bay Packers. He in fact had two one-yard rushing touchdowns in the game. Williams’s 17 rushing touchdowns this season also led the NFL.
4) Seahawks are playoff bound.
With Detroit’s 20-16 win over Green Bay, and Seattle’s 19-16 overtime win over the Los Angeles Rams, the Seahawks made the playoffs and got the number seven seed in the NFC at nine wins and eight losses. Seattle got the edge over Detroit (9-8) because of a dramatic 48-45 Seahawks win over the Lions in Week 4.Â

Last week the Tampa Bay Buccaneers clinched a playoff spot with a 30-24 win over the Carolina Panthers. This week, the NFL’s two other Florida teams, the Miami Dolphins and Jacksonville Jaguars, joined the Buccaneers. It is only the third time ever that all three Florida teams made the playoffs in the same year. The first time was 1998 and the second time was 2000. The Jaguars won the AFC South by beating the Tennessee Titans on Saturday 20-16. The Dolphins made the playoffs by the fact they beat the New York Jets 11-6, and the fact the Buffalo Bills beat the New England Patriots 35-23. In Jacksonville’s win, the Jaguars became the first team in 23 years to comeback in the fourth quarter to win without getting a fourth quarter first down. Jacksonville’s touchdown was a 37-yard fumble return for a touchdown by Josh Allen of Cumberland County, Virginia with two minutes and 51 seconds left.

1) Tom Brady sets NFL record for pass completions in a single season.
The records continue for Tom Brady of San Mateo, California. On Sunday in Atlanta, he set the NFL record for most completions in a season (490). Brady set the old record with 485 pass completions in 2021. The Buccaneers still lost 30-17 to the Atlanta Falcons.
