NBA to begin 2020-21 season December 22
November 7, 2020
The National Basketball Association plans to begin their 2020-21 season on December 22 according to Ben Rohrbach of Yahoo! Sports. The NBA Board of Governors and the NBA Board of Player Representatives have come to an agreement on a 72-game schedule three days before Christmas.
It should be noted that Christmas Day is one of the NBA’s most significant days on the entire schedule as they are the only professional sports league in the United States that has games throughout the day on Christmas on an annual basis. The National Football League sometimes has games played on Christmas when Christmas falls on the weekend or Monday night.
It will now be interesting to see what the NBA schedule looks like, when it will finish, and when the playoffs will start and conclude. There is a hope by many that the NBA season will end in a suitable time frame so it will not impact the Olympic qualifiers in men’s basketball scheduled in late June, or the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2021 from July 23 to August 8.

The other major issue surrounding the NBA at the moment is where will the Toronto Raptors play its home games. Due to coronavirus, the border between Canada and the United States remains closed. Possible locations at this time are Buffalo and Kansas City. In fact, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has even publicly stated he would love to see the Raptors come to Kansas City this season. In Major League Baseball this past year, the Toronto Blue Jays had the majority of their home games at their minor league site in Buffalo.
