Luka Doncic records 50 points for second time in a career

Dallas Mavericks star guard Luka Doncic of Ljubljana, Slovenia recorded his second career 50-point game on Friday. He achieved the mark when he scored 50 points in a 112-106 win over the Houston Rockets.

Doncic made 17 of 30 field goal attempts, six of 12 three-point attempts and 10 of 12 free throw attempts. He also had 10 assists, eight rebounds and three steals. An ironic part of Doncic’s stat line however was the fact that he only had a zero in points for and against. He was on the court for 42 minutes and 16 seconds.

The first time Doncic had 50 points in a game came last season. That is when he had 51 points in a 112-105 Dallas win over the Los Angeles Clippers on February 10, 2022.

Doncic is clearly one of the most elite Slovenian athletes of all-time. Other notables on the list are Los Angeles Kings center Anze Kopitar and two-time Olympic gold medalist Tina Maze, an elite Slovenian alpine skier. For Maze, she won the gold medal in the women’s downhill and giant slalom at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi.

So far in 2022-23, there have been five NBA players who have scored 50 points in a game, and led his team to victory. The other four are Joel Embiid of the Philadelphia 76ers (59 points in a 105-98 win over the Utah Jazz on November 13, and 53 points in a 131-113 win over the Charlotte Hornets on December 11), Devin Booker of the Phoenix Suns (51 points in a 132-113 win over the Chicago Bulls on November 30, 2022, and 58 points in a 118-114 win over the New Orleans Pelicans on December 17, 2022), Anthony Davis of the Los Angeles Lakers (55 points in a 130-119 win over the Washington Wizards on December 4, 2022), and Pascal Siakam of the Toronto Raptors (52 points in a 113-106 win over the New York Knicks on December 21, 2022).
