Indianapolis Colts name Shane Steichen head coach
February 14, 2023

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN on Monday, the Indianapolis Colts are expected to announce the hiring of Shane Steichen of Sacramento, California as their new head coach. Steichen had spent the last two seasons as the offensive co-ordinator of the Philadelphia Eagles, the same Eagles squad that lost the Super Bowl, 38-35 to the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday.
This was a challenging season for the Colts to say the very least. A lot was expected when they acquired quarterback Matt Ryan in a trade with the Atlanta Falcons in last year’s offseason. However, Ryan was unable to bring stability to the Indianapolis offense, and only won four of 12 games as a starter. Ryan’s quarterback rating of 83.9 was the worst of his career.

Then during the 2022 NFL regular season, the Colts made a coaching change. Out was Frank Reich and in was Jeff Saturday. The move was considered extremely controversial because of Saturday’s lack of coaching experience as a head coach or as an assistant coach at the National Football League level. The Colts finished the season at 4-12-1. Reich meanwhile has since been named the head coach of the Carolina Panthers.
Steichen ha spent the last decade as an assistant coach. He was the San Diego Chargers defensive assistant in 2011 and 2012, the Cleveland Browns offensive quality control coach in 2013, the San Diego Chargers offensive quality control coach in 2014 and 2015, the quarterbacks coach of the Chargers from 2016 to 2019, and the interim offensive coordinator of the Los Angeles Chargers in 2020. It is interesting that Steichen has NFL experience as an assistant coach on both sides (offense and defense).
