Bucks sign Giannis Antetokounmpo to the richest contract in NBA history

The Milwaukee Bucks are now committed to the Greek Freak for the next five seasons. According to Eric Woodyard of ESPN, the Bucks signed the great power forward/center Giannis Antetokounmpo of Athens, Greece to a five-year deal worth a whopping $228.2 million extension. This now becomes the richest contract in the history of the NBA according to Tommy Beer of Forbes.

You could make the argument that Antetokounmpo is the best rebounder in the NBA. Last season he had 716 defensive rebounds to lead the league. That averaged out to 11.4 defensive rebounds per game, which led the NBA. Andre Drummond, who played last year with the Detroit Pistons and Cleveland Cavaliers, led the NBA with 15.2 rebounds per game, with Antetokounmpo in second with 13.6 rebounds per game. However, one must realize that Antetokounmpo played in six more games this season than Drummond.

Antetokounmpo can score too. He led the NBA with 596 two-point field goals, and 685 field goals overall. Antetokounmpo also averaged 29.5 points per game, 5.6 assists per game, a .553 field goal percentage, .633 free throw percentage, and a .304 three-point percentage in his seventh season in the NBA.

Some of Antetokounmpo’s other accomplishments with the Bucks include being a two-time NBA most valuable player award winner, four-time all-star, the 2017 NBA Most Improved Player of the Year, and the 2020 NBA Defensive Player of the Year. There is no doubt the Bucks had been committed to signing Antetokounmpo long term for a while. On July 16, 2019, the Bucks signed Giannis’s brother Thanasis to a contract. Unlike Giannis, Thanasis Antetokounmpo is a small forward.
