The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have signed Leonard Fournette of New Orleans, Louisiana. However, in an interesting decision by the Buccaneers, Fournette will not be the starting running back for the Buccaneers at this time. That role will still go to Ronald Jones at this time, according to Jordan Dajani of CBS Sports.Â
Fournette was put on waivers by the Jaguars on Monday, and was officially released on Wednesday. It did not take long for Fournette to find a new franchise and he did not even have to change states as he gets to stay in Florida.
The signing of Fournette by the Buccaneers is interesting. However what is making bigger headlines is the fact that Fournette has filed a grievance against the Jaguars to recoup $4.2 million worth of salary he is owed by the Jaguars from 2018. According to Demetrius Harvey of SB Nation, the Jaguars voided that amount of Fournette’s contract from his salary two years ago.
Fournette will now join a Buccaneers franchise loaded with experience that wants to win now. Among the veterans are quarterback Tom Brady, tight end Rob Gronkowski, and running back LeSean McCoy. Brady comes to Tampa Bay from the New England Patriots, while McCoy from the Chiefs. Expect McCoy to be behind Fournette and Jones on the depth chart. It would not be all that surprising if the Buccaneers look to trade McCoy in the next couple of weeks.
In 2019, Fournette had 265 rushes for 1152 yards and three touchdowns. He also had 76 catches for 522 yards. In three seasons with Jacksonville, Fournette had 666 rushes for 2631 yards and 17 touchdowns, to go along with 134 catches for 1009 yards and two touchdowns.
