Jazz trade Collin Sexton to Hornets

There was an intriguing trade made in the National Basketball Association on Sunday between the Charlotte Hornets and the Utah Jazz. According to the Associated Press, the Jazz traded guard Collin Sexton of Marietta, Georgia and a second round pick in the 2030 NBA Draft to the Charlotte Hornets for center Jusuf Nurkic of Tuzla, Bosnia and Herzegovina. The first reaction from this trade is simple. What 14 year old do the Hornets have their eyes on who they want to select in the 2030 NBA Draft five years from now?

Sexton is joining his third NBA team. He played four seasons with the Cleveland Cavaliers from 2018 to 2022, and the last three years with the Utah Jazz, where he was involved in the Donovan Mitchell trade. This past season, Sexton averaged 18.4 points per game, 4.2 assists per game and 2.7 rebounds per game. He had a field goal percentage of .480, three point percentage of .406, and a free throw percentage of .865.

Nurkic is joining his fifth NBA franchise. He was previously with the Denver Nuggets from 2014 to 2017, the Portland Trail Blazers from 2017 to 2023, the Phoenix Suns from 2023 to 2025, and the Charlotte Hornets in 2025. This past season, Nurkic averaged 8.9 points per game.

Sexton and Nurkic have something in common. They were both on the NBA’s All-Rookie Team. Nurkic was honoured with the Nuggets in 2014-15, and Sexton was honoured with the the Cavaliers in 2018-19.

Now the question in Charlotte is what will happen for the Hornets at the center position? In the last year, they have traded Nurkic, Nick Richards and Mark Williams.
