The 2024 Masters completed on Sunday with Scottie Scheffler of Vineland, New Jersey beating Ludvig Aberg of Sweden by four strokes. However, during the tournament one of the biggest storylines was the fact that Jason Day of Beaudesert, Australia was asked to remove his vest on Friday.
The vest was sponsored by Malbon, a golf clothing company based in Los Angeles, California. Day made golf headlines in January when he left Nike for Malbon. In addition to the controversial vest which stated on the front “No. 313 Malbon Golf Championship,” Day was wearing baggy pants on Thursday in round one also made by Malbon.
One of the main reasons why Day was asked to remove the vest is because he was criticized on social media for the attire. Among the comments made included “Jason Day showing up with parachute pants is insane,” “If you thought what Jason Day was wearing was ridiculous yesterday, today is like 10x worse?,” “inappropriate,” “I think we could crowdsource enough money to buy Jason Day out of his clothing contract,” and “Jason Day’s on-course attire is like a guy who lost his fantasy football league and is forced to wear the most absurd clothing in public.”
The bottom line is that Day could have got away with wearing the vest and baggy pants at the Valero Texas Open. However, this is the Masters, which is focused on tradition more than anything else. That said, there are those who have taken Day’s side and believe he deserves an apology from tournament organizers. Joe Ferguson of Golf Monthly argued that this past weekend the golf world moved backwards when it came to “encouraging diversity” and “growing the game.”
Day, the 2015 PGA Championship winner, was one of six Australians competing at the 2024 Masters. He was joined by Min Woo Lee of Perth, Cameron Davis of Sydney, 2022 British Open champion Cameron Smith of Brisbane, 2013 Masters champion Adam Scott of Adelaide, and amateur Jasper Stubbs of Bairnsdale.
