In a rematch of the final of the 2024 United States Open, Italy’s Jannik Sinner defeated Taylor Fritz of the United States in the ATP World Tour Finals on Sunday. At the Inalpi Arena in Turin, Sinner defeated Fritz 6-4, 6-4.
A major reason Sinner won came down to the serve. Sinner had 14 aces compared to eight for Fritz. Sinner showed great accuracy with his serve too. He had zero aces compared to two for Fritz. Sinner also had six break point chances, where he broke Fritz twice.
Sinner went undefeated throughout the tournament with a perfect record of five wins and zero losses. He finished first in the Ilie Nastase Group. There he beat Alex de Minaur of Australia 6-3, 6-4, Daniil Medvedev of Russia, 6-3, 6-4, and Fritz 6-4, 6-4. Then in the semifinals, Sinner steamrolled past Casper Ruud of Norway, 6-1, 6-2.
This is the seventh time in the history of the event that a player won the ATP Finals in his home country. Sinner follows Americans Jimmy Conners (1977 in New York City), and John McEnroe (1978, 1983 and 1984 in New York City), Germans Boris Becker (1992 and 1995 in Frankfurt), and Michael Stich (1993 in Frankfurt), Australian Lleyton Hewitt (2001 in Sydney) and Great Britain’s Andy Murray (2016 in London).
This is the first time in Sinner’s career he has won the ATP Finals. In 2024, he won eight ATP events. In addition to winning the ATP Finals and United States Open, Sinner won the 2024 Australian Open, the 2024 Rotterdam Open, the 2024 Miami Open, the 2024 Halle Open, the 2024 Cincinnati Open, and the 2024 Shanghai Masters. Next up for Sinner is the 2024 Davis Cup in Malaga, Spain. Italy is playing Argentina in the quarterfinals on Thursday.
