Jamie Soward: Life Is Sweet And Soward After Footy
February 14, 2020
When a professional athlete retires, the transitional phase into the next stage of their life is virtually universally challenging. The highs and lows of a career in sports are difficult to replicate, especially when you’ve achieved the ultimate success of your sport.
After a career spent playing rugby league for the Sydney Roosters, Penrith Panthers and St George Illawarra, winning the NRL premiership at the latter.
As well as two stints in the UK with the London Broncos, and representing NSW Country, the NSW Blues and the Indigenous All-Stars.
Jamie Soward, despite all his success in his playing days, has managed to move onto the next chapter in his life with aplomb, developing a significant media career.

“My transition to media in retirement was something I was always eager to do,” Jamie says.
In the years since retirement, Jamie has maintained media commitments with Channel 9, NRL.com, 2GB, and NSWRL.
“The people at these companies have been great in helping me develop a style and also teaching me along the way.”
Most recently, Jamie has begun hosting his own podcast series, The Sweet and Soward, with former AFL player, Nick Davis.
The podcast boldly kicked off 2020 launching at the Miranda Hotel in front of a live audience.
“Sweet and Soward was always planning to do a live show to showcase what we were about.
“I wanted the sponsors, family and friends that had supported me to come and understand what a podcast was and how the show is conducted.”
The podcast encompasses a wide variety of sports with a jovial and humorous presenting style.
“A podcast is the perfect medium for anyone that loves escaping a car trip, a train trip or just while you do something.
“The easy listening nature that podcasts provide can keep anyone happy.
“Sweet and Soward is that sports podcast with guys that love all sports and also love taking the piss and not taking it too seriously,” Jamie explains.

Rounding out the show is the team dubbed ‘The Dereks’, providing random sports stats and wacky international news stories.
“The Dereks are a great bunch of guys that I have worked with throughout my media commitments the last couple of years.
“They’re all passionate about the project and donate their time around full-time jobs because they believe in the vision of the show; I love those guys and love having them involved.”
Despite rugby league being a huge part of his life, basketball is a sport that has had a huge impact on Jamie’s personal life.
“I love basketball and everything about it, those guys are amazing athletes.
The whole game is an experience and I look forward to basketball season rolling around every year,” Jamie says.
The former footy player is a huge fan of the Boston Celtics and Larry Bird, with the number 3 tattooed on each arm in honour of the NBA Great.
Not only did Jamie propose to his wife, Madi, at the Celtics home arena, The Garden, his daughter, Indiana, is also named after the birth State of Bird.
Looking to what’s in store for the podcast, “We will be doing more live shows throughout the year and plan to make them bigger with guests along the way,” Jamie says.
As for the upcoming NRL season, “I think 2020 will see some movers and shakers early but there is a gap at the top as far as I’m concerned with depth in those teams.
“I won’t pick a winner you’ll have to listen to the Sweet and Soward podcast before Round 1 for that, but I will say that Parramatta have recruited the best and have more pressure on them to win than any other team in 2020.”
