Horses to Follow : Belmont Saturday 4th July

Rail is out just the 5m on Saturday on a track that finally looks to be returning to the Good range, with no rain forecast between the time of writing and the start of racing. Track pattern has been somewhat impossible to predict this season.

Race 1 – Just Under ($4.20):

I’m keen to have a small play here in the first on this Brett Pope runner who really impressed me 1st up this prep over the 1400m at Pinjarra, in a race I believe will hold the strongest form heading into the opener Saturday. Settled back at the tail from the wide gate with Bobo able to steal a run up the rail in what was actually a beautiful ride, and she was almost able to pinch it, just missing behind what I believe to be a nice, Saturday grade horse in Al Mahalo.

Loved the way she really picked up and got going late through the line, suggesting the rise to the mile 2nd up looks a nice formula. Maps to get a far more economical run from gate 2 and gets in at just 53kgs with the claim for Bobo. Happy to have a small play on a horse from a stable thats in some good form.

Race 5 – Levitate ($2.70):

Was a tough watch last weekend when grabbed late by a couple of very promising horses, but the performance was still very good in conditions that didn’t exactly suit. Led them up under Chloe, which early in the day wasn’t where you wanted to be as it was made clear early the rail was well and truly off, with Chloe having to come right out on the track when straightening to get into some decent ground, and just didn’t have enough left in keeping out Puckapunyal and Bright Diamond (who could be a genuine freak), who just stalked the speed she set, with a giant gap back to 4th.

Should be far too sharp out of the stalls for these even from gate 12 and lead this field on his ear, control the tempo and just be too good for them on the quick backup with the stable anticipating some much higher quality spring races for him moving forward.

Race 7 – Indian Pacific ($2.60):

Another race that just sets up so well for him again to win 3 on the bounce here. The form around him has been some of the best in the state at the moment, with Windstorm a huge scalp 1st up and Mood Swings coming out and defeating Bright Diamond and Levitate (who ran 2nd behind him last start) since. Maps to find the rail up top here again from gate 2 back down to what I feel is the more suitable 1200m and its gonna take a good performance from something to run past him.

Although he is stepping up in grade by benchmark standards, the 3 year olds are having plenty of success racing against the older horses at the moment, with the horses he has been holding at bay thus far this prep just being better than this lot in all honesty. Hard to go past.

Long Beach ($4.00):

Having a smaller stake on this cerise and white runner 1st up who showed signs last prep he has the potential to (shock!) be a really nice horse with an electric turn of foot. The win against the older horses over 1200m 2nd up last prep still sticks out in my mind, where he was posted 3 deep with cover the trip, still 6L off the leaders at the top of the straight before jumping out of the ground late to nab the very handy Lipstick Flickers in the last stride, Pike wasn’t even on.

The trial was effortless (despite being one of he yuck Lark Hill back straight trials) and Pike will just jag him back from the draw and let him do his thing late as the tempo looks genuine enough for him to be putting in the big ones late. Pike back on, very wary.

Race 8 – Marocchino ($15.00):

Had 2000m earmarked for this gelding for some time now and he finally gets to the trip in what is a very open race. Last start went around in the Belmont Guineas over the mile, where he was held up for a run between horses until the 200m before finally winding up and getting into those long strides he possesses, where he was far from disgraced (3L) behind some very good horses that would start odds on in a field like this (Kay See, Laverrod, Cambist).

His 2 starts prior over sprint trips behind Indian Pacific has had some really solid form out of them and he was far from disgraced. This has all the makings for a target race, and has been racing like the 2000m will suit him down to the ground. Has a nice change up turn of foot on him where the Fish should be able to just post him up with some cover at the back of the field. The form for me just looks far stronger than Uncle Dick’s and feel the Pike factor has got him at a far shorter price than what he really should be. At the price, very happy to play something each way, place heavy.

Race 10 – King Blitz ($4.40):

Things you love to see, King Blitz, and the Bar Plates coming off. The 1st up effort over the mile was huge with the bar plates on, storming home from second last on the turn to pick up 3rd from a very wide draw that gave Laqdar the only option of jagging him right back. That had the makings of a tune-up run, and given the quality of this guy and how Barry Newnham knows the horse better than the back of his hand, the bar plates coming off here signal to me that he’s got the intent to win, and the horse is ready to do just that.

Can sit much closer to the speed from gate 4 in a field that doesn’t have a whole abundance of speed engaged and gets in really well at the weights for Lucky Laqdar. Has a really strong turn of foot, and the fav is far too short again for me to go near at the current quote, with the form out of that race also suspect at this current point in time, so at the price on offer, the King is definitely worth a spec.
