The Plunge’s Trial Review: Horses Must Follow From Last Week’s Trials 26/1
January 26, 2021

A big day of trials at Randwick where we saw many horses kick off their autumn campaigns. I’ve picked out a horse that looks to be flying since returning from a freshen up and an unraced filly from the red hot Les Bridge stable that looks set to break through on debut.

Southern Lad
Southern Lad is a 6yo gelding that keeps improving every preparation. He has had a 4-week freshen up since finishing 2nd to Athiri in the Listed Razor Sharp Handicap at Randwick and then finishing 5th in a Group 3 at Flemington.
Regan Bayliss settled him back in the field and wide in his trial over 1050m at Randwick. By the turn he had worked his way around the outside of the field and continued to close off strongly to finish 2L 2nd to Canton Kid without being asked to do much.
When To Bet
Southern Lad looks to be going as well as ever but it will really come down to the ambitions of John O’Shea and connections. He currently has a BM rating of 92 so if they were to kick off his autumn campaign around that grade I would be all over him. I would be hesitant if they continued to chase strong black type races.

Skedaddle
This Les Bridge trained 3yo filly is yet to debut but showed promise in her latest trial after 3 consecutive 2nds in as many career trials. She pinged the gates and went straight to the front before giving a strong kick at the top of the straight and went on to win the trial by 5L in a time that was quicker than any other trial at the distance on the morning.
When To Bet
I would love to see her line up at either provincial grade or a midweek city maiden after a win like that.
