Future Winners: Runners You Must Follow From Spring Champion Day

Form Analyst Dean Watling has taken a look at the replays and figures from last Saturday’s Randwick meeting and given us his thoughts including runners you must follow.

Bottega
  • Race: 4
  •  Distance: 1500m
  •  Grade: Group 2

The Gerald Ryan trained Bottega was a red hot favourite on the weekend, coming off 2 big wins. The 3yo Snitzel colt was always gonna be set a task with his get back run on style. He was 10L + off the lead when they turned, got a little lost around the turn and took a little to balance up. When he did he reeled off the fastest last 800,600,400,200 meter splits of the race, (L600 – 33.23) where they broke the track record. Look for 1600m + now and the applications of either blinkers or winkers to straighten him up.

Accession
  • Race: 5
  • Distance: 1200m
  •  Grade: Group 2

The ultra-consistent Waller-trained, 3yo colt was one I think may have slipped under the radar, his run to the eye in the Group 2 Roman Consul didn’t look anything special, but the data and sectionals were outstanding. Take note 5/7 winners at Randwick came from positions 1st/2nd in the run. Blinkers went on and change of tactics were to be ridden closer. He was 7 L last and balanced up beautifully, ran home in the fastest 200m of the day 11.06, 3rd fastest 400m 21.80 and 2nd fastest 600m 32.70. 1200m too short look for 1400-1600m, speed on and a nice soft barrier.

Aqua D’ivina
  • Race: 3
  • Distance: 1400m
  • Grade: Benchmark 88

Thought the return of the 5yo Mathew Smith trained mare was super. Was produced first up over the 1400m in a BM 88. She reeled off some outstanding sectionals when set a big task, track for mine played on pace. 3rd fastest 200m home of the day, a whole lot of improvement to come. Trials prior to run looked super and i can see her producing a great prep. Look for races between 1400m-2000m where she may sit closer on a hot speed.
