Grizzlies trade Steven Adams to the Rockets
February 3, 2024
The Memphis Grizzlies and Houston Rockets were involved in a Thursday trade according to Thomas Tittley of The Score. The Grizzlies traded center Steven Adams of Rotorua, New Zealand to the Rockets for guard Victor Oladipo of Silver Spring, Maryland, two second round picks in 2024 and another second round pick in 2025.
It is interesting that this transaction was made when you consider the fact that Adams and Oladipo have not played a single game this season. Adams is expected to be out for the full 2023-24 National Basketball Association regular season after undergoing right knee surgery in October. He is projected to be back on the court for the start of the 2024-25 season. Oladipo meanwhile, tore his patellar tendon in the NBA playoffs last year while as a member of the Miami Heat against the Milwaukee Bucks. He is projected to return at some point this season according to Rogers Sportsnet.Â
This is the third significant injury for Oladipo. He has also had two surgeries on his quadriceps tendon.
Adams is joining his fourth NBA franchise. He previously played seven seasons with the Oklahoma City Thunder from 2013 to 2020, one season with the New Orleans Pelicans in 2020-21, and two seasons with the Grizzlies from 2021 to 2023. A defensive specialist who averaged 11.5 rebounds last season, Adams joins former Grizzlies teammate Dillon Brooks of Mississauga, Ontario in Houston.
Oladipo is joining his sixth NBA franchise. He previously played with the Orlando Magic (2013 to 2016), the Oklahoma City Thunder (2016 to 2017), the Indiana Pacers (2017 to 2021), the Houston Rockets (2021), and the Miami Heat (2021 to 2023). A two-time All-Star with the Pacers in 2017-18, and 2018-19, Oladipo averaged a NBA-high 2.4 steals per game in 2017-18, and was also named the most improved player in 2017-18.
