Scottie Scheffler wins 2022 Arnold Palmer Invitational

Scottie Scheffler of Ridgewood, New Jersey won the 2022 Arnold Palmer Invitational from Orlando, Florida on Sunday. For Scheffler, it was his second PGA Tour victory in 2022, as he also won the Waste Management Phoenix Open over Patrick Cantlay in a playoff on Super Bowl Sunday.

At the Arnold Palmer Invitational this past weekend, Scheffler shot a score of -5 to beat Tyrrell Hatton of England, Norway’s Viktor Hovland, and American Billy Horschel by a stroke at -4. Those at -3 were 2019 United States Open champion Gary Woodland and fellow American Chris Kirk. Meanwhile, Australia’s Lucas Herbert of Bendigo, Victoria, and American Talor Gooch were three strokes off the lead at -2.

For the second time in one month the PGA Tour winner for the week was a golfer who was unable to be under-par in the final round. At the 2022 Genesis Invitational in Pacific Palisades, California in late February, Joaquin Niemann of Chile shot a final round score of even par, even though his four round score was -19.

In Orlando this weekend, Scheffler was only in the 60s once. In the third round, he shot a score of four-under-par 68. Scheffler posted scores of two-under-par 70 in round one, one-over-par 73 in round two, and even par in round three. In the fourth and final round, Scheffler had three birdies and three bogeys. He birdied the second, fifth, and 12th holes, and bogeyed the first, third, and ninth holes.

Prior to 2022, Scheffler had never won a PGA Tournament since joining the PGA Tour in 2020. Even though he was not victorious on his first year of the PGA Tour, Scheffler had an impact as he was the PGA Rookie of the Year. The highlight was finishing in fourth place at the 2020 PGA Championship.
