Our three best tips for the Scottish Open
July 7, 2022
A new era in the Scottish Open begins on Thursday. The premier golf tournament leading up to the British Open is now sanctioned on the PGA Tour. Australia’s Min Woo Lee is the defending champion, as he won last year in a playoff over Belgium’s Thomas Detry, and England’s Matt Fitzpatrick, the 2022 United States Open champion. Here are three golfers to consider at the Scottish Open this week.
1) Hideki Matsuyama
The 2021 Masters champion is currently 14th in the world. He has four top 10 finishes in 2022 including a victory at the Sony Open in Hawaii. Matsuyama is entering Scotland with momentum, as he was sensational in his last round of golf, the fourth round at the U.S. Open, where he shot a fourth round score of 65 and finished the third major of the year in fourth place. One area of concern for Matsuyama has been finishing the tournament. He withdrew from the Valero Texas Open earlier this year because of a neck injury according to the PGA Tour and was disqualified from the Memorial Tournament in Ohio for having a non-conforming club according to Edward Sutelan of The Sporting News.

The 44th ranked player in the world has only missed the cut twice in 16 events in 2022 to date. The Englishman has had success at the Scottish Open in the past. While playing at the Renaissance Club in 2020, he lost in a playoff to fellow Englishman Aaron Rai.

There he shot a four-round score of -22 and beat Thomas Pieters of Belgium in a playoff. Li’s win in Germany was his third career win on the European Tour.
