The San Francisco Giants have signed pitcher Ryan Borucki of Mundelein, Illinois to a one-year contract worth $1.5 million according to the Associated Press. There was an opening on the Giants pitching staff because San Francisco announced a week ago that Hayden Birdsong of Mattoon, Illinois would miss the 2026 Major League Baseball season with Tommy John Surgery.
Borucki is joining his fourth Major League Baseball team. He has previously pitched six seasons with the Toronto Blue Jays (2018 to 2022 and again in 2025), one season with the Seattle Mariners (2022), and three seasons with the Pittsburgh Pirates (2023 to 2025).
In 39 games last season with the Pirates and Blue Jays, Borucki had a record of one win and three losses with an earned run average of 4.63. In 39 games and 35 innings pitched, Borucki gave up 29 hits, 18 earned runs, four home runs and 16 walks, with 32 strikeouts, seven holds and a WHIP (walks and hits per innings pitched) of 1.29. Borucki’s win came on May 23 in a 6-5 Pirates win over the Milwaukee Brewers as Borucki threw one shutout inning.
Borucki was significantly more effective with the Blue Jays than the Pirates last season. In 35 games with the Pirates, Borucki had an earned run average of 5.28. In four games with the Blue Jays, Borucki had an earned run average of 0.00 as he did not give up an earned run in 4 1/3 innings of work.
Birdsong was expected to be a spot starter for the Giants this season as he has had 26 starts for San Francisco over the last two seasons compared to 11 relief appearances. In 2025, he had a record of four wins and four losses with an earned run average of 4.80.
