The New York Yankees won the opening game of the 2026 Major League Baseball regular season. On Wednesday night at Oracle Park in San Francisco, California, the Yankees spanked the San Francisco Giants 7-0 in interleague action.
The most impressive performance on the Yankees came from starting pitcher Max Fried of Santa Monica, California. Fried threw six and a third shutout innings and gave up two hits and one walk to go along with four strikeouts. Of Fried’s 86 pitches were 53 strikes.
Offensively, the Yankees had 10 hits. Designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton of Panorama City, California and catcher Austin Wells of Scottsdale, Arizona led the Yankees with two hits each. Remarkably, the only Yankees offensive player who did not get a hit was right fielder Aaron Judge, who went zero for five at the plate. Yankees center fielder Trent Grisham of Burleson, Texas was the only Yankees player with an extra base hit as he hit a triple in the second inning which scored Wells and third baseman Ryan McMahon of Yorba Linda, California.
This was also the first Major League Baseball game played with the new Automatic Ball-Strike Challenge System. In the fourth inning it was used for the first time. Yankees shortstop Jose Caballero challenged a Logan Webb strike and was incorrect as the strike call was upheld.
The Giants struggled offensively and from a pitching perspective. Logan Webb, the Giants starting pitcher, gave up six earned runs in five innings of work, and as a team, San Francisco only had three hits. It will be interesting to see when pitcher Ryan Borucki will make his Giants debut, after coming to terms on a contract on Tuesday.
