Giannis Antetokounmpo wins 2020 NBA MVP Award

Giannis Antetokounmpo of Athens, Greece has won the 2020 National Basketball Association Most Valuable Player Award. Antetokounmpo averaged a double double this past season for the Milwaukee Bucks as he had 29.5 points per game and 13.6 rebounds per game. Both statistics were career highs.

In 63 games, Antetokounmpo had a field goal percentage of .553, three-point percentage of .304 and a free throw percentage of .633. He also averaged 5.6 assists per game, one steal per game and one block per game.

It is no surprise Antetokounmpo won the NBA MVP award. The Bucks were the best team in the regular season with a record of 56 wins and 17 losses.

Antetokounmpo also becomes the third player in NBA history to win the NBA Most Valuable Player Award and NBA Defensive Player of the Year Award in the same season. The other two players to accomplish the feat are Michael Jordan of Brooklyn, New York (1987-88 with the Chicago Bulls), and Hakeem Olajuwon of Lagos, Nigeria (1993-94 with the Houston Rockets).

Antetokounmpo also became the 12th player in NBA history to win the most valuable player award in back-to-back seasons. He follows Bill Russell, Wilt Chamberlain, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Moses Malone, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, Tim Duncan, Steve Nash, LeBron James and Stephen Curry.

In 2019-20, Antetokounmpo was also on the NBA’s first all-star team alongside James, James Harden of the Houston Rockets, Anthony Davis of the Los Angeles Lakers and Luka Doncic of the Dallas Mavericks. Other NBA Award winners were Nick Nurse of the Toronto Raptors (coach of the year), Ja Morant of the Memphis Grizzlies (rookie of the year), Montrezl Harrell of the Los Angeles Clippers (sixth man of the year), and Brandon Ingram of the New Orleans Pelicans (most improved player).
