Giannis Antetokounmpo becomes Bucks’s all-time rebounding leader
December 20, 2023
According to FOX Sports on Sunday, Milwaukee Bucks power forward Giannis Antetokounmpo of Athens, Greece became the Bucks’s all-time leader in rebounds. He accomplished the feat in a 128-119 Bucks win over the Houston Rockets in a game where he had a season-high 17 boards. Antetokounmpo now has 7165 total rebounds, and broke the record previously set by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar of New York, New York, who had 7162 rebounds with the Bucks from 1969 to 1975 in 467 games.
Antetokounmpo’s 7165 rebounds came in 744 games with the Bucks since 2013. He has 5841 defensive rebounds and 1324 offensive rebounds. It should be noted that there is no breakdown between offensive and defensive rebounds for Abdul-Jabbar during his time with the Bucks as the rebound category was only officially separated starting in the 1973-74 season.
Abdul-Jabbar is third all-time in rebounds with 17440 in 1560 games. He had 10729 rebounds with the Los Angeles Lakers from 1975 to 1989. The all-time rebounds leader is Wilt Chamberlain of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, who had 23924 rebounds in 1045 games with the Philadelphia Warriors, San Francisco Warriors, Philadelphia 76ers and Lakers from 1959 to 1973. Second on the list is Bill Russell of the Boston Celtics, who had 21620 rebounds from 1956 to 1969 in 963 games.
So far this season, Antetokounmpo has 274 total rebounds. That is the sixth most in the NBA. Antetokounmpo is only behind Denver Nuggets center Nikola Jokic of Sombor, Serbia (332), Los Angeles Lakers center Anthony Davis of Chicago, Illinois (314), Sacramento Kings center Domantas Sabonis (308), Minnesota Timberwolves center Rudy Gobert of Saint-Quentin, France (304), and Chicago Bulls center Nikola Vucevic (294).
The Bucks are currently second in the Eastern Conference. They have a record of 19 wins and seven losses, and are a game and a half back of the conference leading Boston Celtics.
