Randwick 6 – Colette

Colette shocked with a dominant win in the G2 Apollo Stakes 1st up and I expect her to follow up with Group 1 success in the Chipping Norton.

Many expected Colette to get back and run on well behind the likes of Kolding and Verry Elleegant, who she meets again today. Rachel King made a match-winning move early and settled her 4th on the fence. By the home straight she showed an explosive turn of foot and went straight past Kolding and gave nothing behind her a chance.

She comes up against a similar opposition here and whilst the talented Verry Elleegant is all the rage, I am willing to take the better odds on Colette who did win by 2 lengths last start.

Randwick Race 7 – Never Talk

A hot field of 3yo fillies line up for the Group 1 Surround Stakes and whilst there are many chances, I just can’t go past the run of Never Talk in the Light Finger Stakes, which is the key form reference here.

From a wide barrier, Never Talk was forced to settle at the rear of the field and on the turn she didn’t look a hope. The Lees filly weaved a passage through runners going nowhere in the wet conditions and when she finally saw clear daylight ahead at the 150m she let down a huge only to just miss by a few strides.

The step up to 1400m and barrier 7 are big ticks today. Connections will be hoping the track doesn’t dry out too much. I am scared of the likes of Montefilia, Dame Giselle and Away Game but off that last run I cannot let Never Talk go around at close to double figure odds.

Flemington Race Race 4 – Subedar

The Cummings yard have scratched Subedar on consecutive weekends at Sydney due to wet tracks and it looks like they’ve sent the grey to Melbourne in order to find a dry surface.

First-up off a long layoff, Subedar settled at the rear of the small field and produced a great run down the outside. For a moment at the 150m the 4yo grey looked like he’d go past the winner but he peaked on his run and finished 2nd, which indicates he should run much better with an over 6 weeks work under his belt.

Stepping back to 1200m is a slight query for me but I’m confident to has too much class for this field.
