The first round of Wimbledon is set to start on Monday. Here are four unseeded players I am predicting to beat seeded players in the first round of the gentlemen’s singles draw.
Raphael Collignon
I am predicting the 43rd ranked player in the world, Raphael Collignon of Liege, Belgium, to beat the 20th seed Arthur Fils of France. Fils has not played a full tennis match since Madrid when he lost to eventual Madrid champion Jannik Sinner of Italy in the semifinals. Collignon reached the quarterfinals of Halle where he beat former Wimbledon semifinalist Roberto Bautista Agut of Spain in qualifying, Australia’s Alexei Popyrin and Italy’s Mattia Bellucci. Head-to-head, this will be their first ever meeting.
Quentin Halys
Halys of Bondy, France, is 101st in the world. However, I have him beating the 32nd seed Matteo Arnaldi of Italy. Arnaldi is a clay court specialist and has never won a first round match at Wimbledon. This is their first ever meeting.
Kamil Majchrzak
Majchrzak of Piotrków Trybunalski, Poland is the 46th ranked player in the world. I am predicting him to beat the 30th seed, Alejandro Tabilo of Chile. Last year, Majchrzak reached the fourth round of Wimbledon, and upset former Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini in the first round, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4, 5-7, 6-3.
Lorenzo Sonego
Sonego is the 72nd ranked player in the world. I am predicting the unseeded Italian to beat the 29th seed, Tomas Martin Etcheverry of Argentina. Like Majchrzak, Sonego reached the fourth round of Wimbledon last year, where he beat Brandon Nakashima of the United States in an exciting five setter, 6-7, 7-6, 7-6, 3-6, 7-6. This is their first ever meeting.
