Former Patriots RB Rex Burkhead retires at age 33

According to Danny Jaillet of Yahoo! Sports on Tuesday, former National Football League running back Rex Burkhead of Winchester, Kentucky has retired at the age of 33. He spent 10 seasons in the NFL. The first four seasons were with the Cincinnati Bengals from 2013 to 2016. That was followed by four seasons with the New England Patriots from 2017 to 2020, and two seasons with the Houston Texans in 2021 and 2022.
Burkhead played 115 games in his NFL career. He had 488 rushes for 1908 rushing yards and 17 rushing touchdowns. Burkhead also had 192 receptions for 1534 receiving yards and nine touchdown catches.
One of Burkhead’s most memorable games came on September 27, 2020 in a 36-20 Patriots win over the Las Vegas Raiders. In the 16-point New England win, he had three touchdowns. Burkhead had an 11-yard touchdown catch from Cam Newton, and had touchdown runs of five and two yards. Burkhead had 98 total yards (49 rushing yards and 49 receiving yards).
Twice Burkhead eclipsed 100 yards rushing in a single contest. He had 119 yards and two rushing touchdowns in a 27-10 Bengals win over the Baltimore Ravens on New Year’s Day, 2017, and then had 149 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns in a 41-29 Texans win over the Los Angeles Chargers on Boxing Day, 2021.
Burkhead was also a Super Bowl champion. He was part of the Patriots team that won Super Bowl LIII. In a 13-3 Patriots win over the Los Angeles Rams on February 3, 2019, Burkhead had seven rushes for 43 yards, and two catches for 15 yards.
At the collegiate level, Burkhead played at Nebraska. He was the Bengals’s sixth round pick, 190th overall in the 2013 NFL Draft.
