Flavio Cobolli of Florence, Italy has won the 2026 Mexican Open. In the final on Saturday, Cobolli defeated two-time United States Open semifinalist Frances Tiafoe of the United States, 7-6, 6-4. Cobolli was the fifth seed in the Mexican Open and Tiafoe was the eighth seed.
In Saturday’s final, Cobolli had 10 aces and Tiafoe had six aces. Throughout the entire tournament, Cobolli had 51 aces. Interestingly, Tiafoe was the only seeded player Cobolli faced in the entire tournament.
This was Cobolli’s first ever ATP win over Tiafoe in three matches. Tiafoe won 6-4, 6-2 in the quarterfinals of Delray Beach in 2024, and 6-1, 6-4 in the third round of Washington in 2025.
This was Cobolli’s third ATP title victory of his career. The first came at the 2025 Tiriac Open in Romania, and the second came at the 2025 Hamburg Open in Germany. The Tiriac Open was an ATP 250 point event, and the Hamburg Open was a 500 point event, like the Mexican Open. At the Tiriac Open, Cobolli defeated Sebastian Baez of Argentina, 6-4, 6-4, and at the Hamburg Open, Cobolli defeated Russia’s Andrey Rublev, 6-2, 6-4.
In Cobolli’s first two ATP titles, he was the lower seed in the final. In the Tiriac Open, Cobolli was the third seed and Baez was the first seed. In the Hamburg Open, Cobolli was unseeded, while Rublev was the third seed.
This was Cobolli’s first ATP title on hard court. The previous two titles will be on clay.
The fact that the Mexican Open even took place this past weekend is rather interesting when you take a look at all of the crime that is currently existing in Mexico. The Diving World Cup which was set to take place in Zapopan from March 5-8, has already been cancelled.
