Flavio Cobolli of Florence, Italy won the 2025 Hamburg Open on Saturday. It was a magical run for Cobolli as he came away with three very impressive victories.
In the final, Cobolli upset the third seed Andrey Rublev of Russia, 6-2, 6-4. A major reason why Cobolli got the win is because he made the most of his opportunities. He had only four break point opportunities, but capitalized on all of them. Cobolli also won 72% of the points on the second serve, compared to Rublev, who only won 40% of his second serve points.
In the second round, Cobolli upset the fifth seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina of Spain, 6-4, 7-5. Cobolli broke Davidovich Fokina six times, and did not allow the Spaniard to record a single ace. In the quarterfinals, Cobolli defeated 2019 Wimbledon semifinalist Roberto Bautista Agut of Spain, 7-6, 6-0. Cobolli’s return of serve was a difference maker here too as Bautista Agut did not have an ace. Cobolli broke Bautista Agut four times, and was the more consistent server as he only had one double fault compared to three double faults for Bautista Agut.
Cobolli also beat Vitaliy Sachko 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 in the first round, and Tomas Martin Etchverry of Argentina 2-6, 7-5, 6-4 in the semifinals. With the tournament victory, Cobolli moved up to 26th in the world rankings. He is the third highest Italian, behind world number one and three-time major champion Jannik Sinner of Italy, and world number seven Lorenzo Musetti.
Cobolli’s first ATP title came at the 2025 Romanian Open. There he beat Sebastian Baez of Argentina, 6-4, 6-4.
In the first round of the French Open on Tuesday, Cobolli will face a major champion in Marin Cilic of Croatia, the 2014 United States Open champion. Their only prior ATP matchup came in the first round of Umag, Croatia, where Cobolli won 6-4, 6-3.
