Max Verstappen meeting with McLaren has sent Formula 1’s rumour mill into overdrive, but before Australian fans panic about Oscar Piastri’s future, it’s worth separating fact from fiction. The talks may have happened, but that doesn’t necessarily mean McLaren is preparing to replace its rising Australian star.
Multiple reports have confirmed that Verstappen’s management held preliminary discussions with McLaren CEO Zak Brown during the Austrian Grand Prix weekend, fuelling speculation that the four-time world champion could sensationally leave Red Bull before his contract expires.
The biggest talking point?
Some reports suggested a blockbuster swap involving Verstappen moving to McLaren while Piastri headed in the opposite direction to Red Bull. It’s the type of rumour that dominates Formula 1’s “silly season,” but at this stage there is little evidence that such a deal is close.

McLaren boss Zak Brown did little to silence the speculation.
When asked whether Verstappen could one day drive for McLaren, Brown joked that it would only become a possibility if someone were to “slip on a banana peel,” while making it clear both Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris remain happy at the team.
That is an important detail.
Both Piastri and Norris are contracted long-term and remain central to McLaren’s plans. Piastri, in particular, has emerged as one of Formula 1’s brightest young stars and continues to justify the faith McLaren placed in him after his highly publicised move from Alpine.
Many within the paddock also believe the discussions were simply smart business.
As several Formula 1 insiders have pointed out, team principals routinely meet with managers representing the sport’s biggest names. If the manager of a four-time world champion asks for a meeting, most teams are going to take it. That doesn’t automatically mean negotiations are advanced or that contracts are about to change.
The timing of the rumours is hardly surprising.
Red Bull has endured a turbulent period, with questions continuing to surround its long-term competitiveness despite encouraging upgrades introduced at the Austrian Grand Prix. Verstappen’s runner-up finish showed the team is moving in the right direction, but it has not completely silenced speculation over his future.
Red Bull CEO Laurent Mekies has also attempted to calm the rumours, insisting Verstappen remains committed to the Milton Keynes outfit and that the focus remains on returning the team to championship-winning form.
For Piastri, the speculation may actually be a compliment.
If McLaren is being linked with Verstappen, it is because the team has become one of Formula 1’s premier destinations. The Australian has played a major role in that rise and remains one of the cornerstones of the team’s future.
Until something more substantial emerges, there is little reason for McLaren fans—or Australian motorsport fans—to believe Piastri is about to lose his seat.
If anything, the episode serves as another reminder that Formula 1’s transfer market never sleeps.
