Emiliano Grillo of Resistencia, Argentina won the 2023 Charles Schwab Challenge on Sunday. It was the second PGA Tour win for Grillo, as he previously won the 2015 Frys.com Open.
On Sunday, Grillo beat Adam Schenk of Vincennes, Indiana in a playoff. Both golfers qualified for an extra session with a 72-hole score of -8. Â On the first playoff hole, Grillo and Schenk both had scores of four on the par four. Then on the second playoff hole, which was the par three 16th, Grillo won with a birdie by posting a score of two.
Grillo was in control heading into the 72nd hole. He was at -10. However, Grillo’s tee shot went into a creek, and he ended up recording a double bogey six.
In the fourth round, Grillo shot a two-under-par 68. He had birdies on the first, third, sixth, seventh, 12th, and 16th holes. Grillo bogeyed the second and fourth holes.
Grillo had one eagle on the weekend. He had a score of three on the par five first hole in the third round.
In both of Grillo’s career wins, he has won in a playoff. At the Frys.com Open in Napa, California eight years ago, Grillo beat Kevin Na of the United States on the second extra hole after a four round score of -15.
Grillo was also part of a five-man playoff in 2015. At the Puerto Rico Open, he golfed alongside Germany’s Alex Cejka, and Americans Jon Curran, Tim Petrovic and Sam Saunders. The champion was eventually Cejka.
On Sunday was the third playoff on the PGA Tour calendar for 2023. The prior champions were Chris Kirk at the Honda Classic and Matt Fitzpatrick at the RBC Heritage.Â
