It was a fantastic Wednesday for Netherlands tennis as two Dutch players delivered gigantic second round upsets at the 2026 National Bank Open in Montreal, Quebec. First, world number 69 Tallon Griekspoor of Haarlem, Netherlands defeated the first seed and French Open champion Alexander Zverev of Germany, 6-7, 6-2, 6-4. Then, world number 70 Botic van de Zandschulp of Wageningen defeated the fourth seed and 2021 United States Open champion Daniil Medvedev of Russia, 6-3, 7-6.

Griekspoor rebounded after losing 7-3 in the first set tiebreak. He broke Zverev four times in nine opportunities. This was Griekspoor’s third win in 12 meetings against Zverev. Griekspoor’s first win was by a score of 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the second round of Rotterdam. Griekspoor’s second win was by a score of 4-6, 7-6, 7-6 in the second round of Indian Wells in 2025.

There were two key statistics in van de Zandschulp’s win over Medvedev. First was double faults, as van de Zandschulp had four and Medvedev had nine. The second was winning percentage on second serve. Van de Zandschulp was at 68% and Medvedev was at 29%. This was the first win in five career meetings against Medvedev for van de Zandschulp.

Next up for Griekspoor in the third round is the 30th seed, and 2026 French Open semifinalist Matteo Arnaldi of Italy. Arnaldi won their only previous meeting, in the first round of the 2026 French Open, 6-7, 6-3, 7-6, 6-3.

Van de Zandschulp’s next opponent in round three is Hubert Hurkacz of Poland, the 2021 Wimbledon semifinalist. In their only prior meeting, van de Zandschulp was victorious by a score of 6-7, 6-7, 6-2, 6-2, 6-4 in the first round of the 2021 French Open.
