According to Tony Barron of ESPN on Monday, Dustin Johnson, the number two golfer in the world, and Brooklyn Nets head coach Steve Nash have teamed up with National Hockey League legend Wayne Gretzky, to buy a professional lacrosse team in Las Vegas. The new team will begin play in the National Lacrosse League starting in 2022-23.

Johnson has a family connection to Wayne Gretzky. He is engaged to Paulina Gretzky, who is Wayne Gretzky’s oldest child. The two-time major champion has won the 2016 United States Open and the 2020 Masters.

Wayne Gretzky of Brantford, Ontario, is the greatest hockey player of all-time. He is the all-time leader in the National Hockey League in goals (894), assists (1963), and points (2857). Gretzky also won the Hart Trophy as the NHL most valuable player nine times in his career, and won four Stanley Cups with the Edmonton Oilers in 1984, 1985, 1987, and 1988. Gretzky previously was a part-owner of the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League and the Phoenix Coyotes of the National Hockey League.

Nash is the best Canadian basketball player of all-time. As a point guard, Nash was the most valuable player of the National Basketball Association while with the Phoenix Suns in 2005 and 2006. He won the Lou Marsh Award as Canada’s top athlete in 2005, and will be inducted into Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame in 2021. Nash is also the part-owner of the Vancouver Whitecaps of Major League Soccer.

The 2020-21 National Lacrosse League season was cancelled because of coronavirus. In 2021-22, the NLL is expanding to Fort Worth, Texas, where the Panther City Lacrosse Club will play. Also next season, the Toronto Rock is moving from Toronto to Hamilton, but will still be known as the Toronto Rock.
