Dream falls apart: Madrid already looking into Alexander-Arnold sale
August 27, 2025

Trent Alexander-Arnold’s dream move to Real Madrid, which he forced through over more than a year while still at Liverpool, appears to be unravelling a whole lot quicker for the English superstar.
The Liverpudlian quietly pushed for the Madrid move through most of the 2024/25 season, eventually getting his wish when the Spanish giants paid £10 million just before the Club World Cup.

Before he moved, most of the football world warned Trent that he would be facing an uphill climb, especially considering he has never been defensively strong, even as a right-back; his qualities instead lay in his playmaking from deep and the way that Jurgen Klopp had built his championship Reds around Trent’s pinpoint passing accuracy.
He ignored all those for his “dream move” to Madrid to wear the La Liga champ’s whites.
But those warnings have very quickly turned into a reality away from the system where Alexander-Arnold made his name. Some Madrid fans have already been sharing “fail” compilations and begging Xabi Alonso to sell him.
The Madridistas may well get their wish, too: Reports are emerging that Trent is on the chopping block.
Incredibly, Madrid is already sounding out other clubs to see if they’d buy the 26-year-old this Summer, mainly because Alonso prefers the more defensively sound (though aging) Dani Carvajal on the flank.

On that decision, The Athletic has reported: “[Carvajal] came back from an anterior cruciate ligament injury at the end of last season and sources close to him expect the player to keep his place in Alonso’s XI for a long time, despite Alexander-Arnold’s signing.” Grim reading for Trent, who would have backed himself to take the spot quite quickly.

Then, speaking on Sunday, Alonso declared: “We have more than 20 players… I’m going to try to get the best out of all of them. Sometimes they can be starters and be important, or play just a few minutes and be important.”
The only saving grace for Trent is that no club seems to be lining up to grab him. A Liverpool return may have seemed the best next option for him, bar the unceremonious exit and the fact that Arne Slot doesn’t rate him as highly as Klopp did. (The Reds have already signed his replacement, too.) Other English clubs may take a look, but it won’t be from among the top six.
For now, Trent will be clinging to Alonso’s latest words: “I haven’t made any decisions for the next month.”
