Dominic Thiem withdraws from the 2022 Australian Open

Dominic Thiem of Wiener Neustadt, Austria, the 2020 United States Open men’s singles champion, has withdrawn from the 2022 Australian Open because of a lack of preparation following a wrist injury at the 2021 Mallorca Championship according to Michael Doyle of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation on Tuesday. Thiem is the second high profile men’s tennis player to withdraw from the 2022 Australian Open. The other is Milos Raonic of Canada, who withdrew on Saturday because of a heel injury.
Thiem has not played a ATP match since withdrawing against Adrian Mannarino of France in the second round of Mallorca. Thiem was leading 5-2 at the time.

Thiem’s best result at the Australian Open came in 2020. There he reached the final before losing to Novak Djokovic of Serbia in five sets, 6-4, 4-6, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4. It is one of four grand slam finals Thiem has participated in. In addition to reaching (and winning) the 2020 U.S, Open, Thiem was the finalist of the 2018 and 2019 French Open. At Roland Garros three years ago, Thiem lost in straight sets to Rafael Nadal of Spain, 6-4, 6-3, 6-2. Then at the 2019 French Open, Thiem lost to Nadal again. This time in four sets by a score of 6-3, 5-7, 6-1, 6-1.
Thiem was also to participate in the 2022 ATP Cup leading up to the 2022 Australian Open. He will now be replaced by Lucas Miedler, the 291st ranked player in the world. Meidler will be joined by Dennis Novak, the 119th ranked player in the world. Thiem, in contrast is currently ranked 15th. At the 2022 ATP Cup, Austria is in Pool B alongside Russia, Italy, and Australia.
